I'm in Canada, so we get the same winters, mine came back and very big this year. I didn't cover, just left them. :):):)
I live in the chicago area : i have mini carnations outside in a pot will they come back next year?
If you have them in a clay pot you need to take them into the basement for the winter....If not cover them up good with some leaves or straw Yes they will come back if you keep them from freezing,,,
Reply:yes carnations will come back and multiply.
Reply:I'm going to offer a more cautious answer... they could come back.
What sort of carnation (Dianthus) do you have? There are some annual or short lived forms out there. They would not come back unless measures were taken.
Many forms of garden pinks (miniature or small carnations) are extremely hardy. I've never had luck with any full sized carnation varieties, planted in my garden, in USDA hardiness zone 5. But my pinks are great.
Move the container so that it is against the house. There will be some heat that escapes, which will help keep the pot and plant marginally warmer than the outside air temperature. Water them if the soil seems dry... I know they aren't growing in the winter, but if the roots dry out they'll die. Winter rain/ snow may provide all the water that is needed. Lastly try to elevate the pot slightly. Put a piece of thin board under the pot. That will lessen the amount of freeze/thaw damage on your pot (concrete or terra cotta).
Lastly never spend more on your plants that you're hoping will winter over, than you would on annuals that you would throw away. That way if they don't survive, it's not so painful.
I hope that this helps
Good luck-
Reply:I have dianthus (carnations) in a wooden planter outside and they come back every year. The plants should be okay, but depending on what type of pot, you may want to insulate the pot by wrapping with outdoor insulation for winter so it does not crack. and make sure it has good drainage so water will not fill and freeze inside.

What kind of food can u put in plants/flowers? people food?
A copper penny helps to keep flowers fresh.
Reply:7-UP works great for cut flowers...
Reply:water, that's it and dog poo lol. otherwise nothing!
Reply:If you can find old and molding or decaying plants and base the new plant with it then the new plant will live longer. Also you can stick a copper penny into the sides and it will keep it fresh. You really won't have to use anything else for the plant if you just keep it watered daily and give it plenty of sunlight, unless it's a shade plant. :]] - Sarah
Reply:I've heard of sugar too
i was talking about this a few days ago you can put
like food that you have already eaten like bread, fruits, veggies, those are good for the soil
Reply:I know that it sounds nasty but organic material (decaying Plants) actually helps it live longer.Try puting it in the pot.
Reply:aspirin and vinegar are horrible for all living things... don't put them in the ground, please.
---- ---- ---- ----
Use banana peels, potato peels, the ends of your celery stalks, the parts of your fish that you don't eat...
Dead leaves too...
Those are all good compost materials.
Coffee grounds are ok if you live in an area with alkaline soil but if you have alot of pine trees around then it means your soil is acidic enough... don't use the coffee grounds.
Reply:DO NOT USE ASPIRIN, EPSON SALTS, SUGAR OR VINEGAR, PLEASE!
Feed your plants regularly. If you want to give them other balanced nutrition, start a compost pile. Otherwise, please don't give them things that people consume!
Reply:I have always heard that tea is very good for plants. just black what evers left in the tea pot like. i know this isnt food but my grandmother used to always throw the water from washing the dishes in her rose bushes it never did any harm and always got rid of greenfly.
Reply:same as you said
Reply:you could just but pant food which would work much better but my english teacher always empties his bottle of coke into the flowers outside the classroom!!

What do you think about this for valentines day?
I have a plan in mind to make this valentines day unforgettable for the greatest woman in my life. Tell me what you think because i'm going to do this later tonight.
I'll start by running her a bubble bath in advanced making sure that the bubbles carry the pedals of the roses and carnations that i've picked up and placing a bottle of strawberry white zinfidel in a brass bucket of ice next to the bath. I'll use candles to accent the key areas that I would like for her to see first. But before this I'm making a light meal for her of her own choice while she watches, becuase I want her to know that I can cook. I planned the desert to accent the relaxing bath for her, it's strawberrys with a milk chocolate coating on the outside with a white strip of white chocolate, and using a small fluid injector that you can get at walmart, i'll place a small amount of strawberry cream and alittle Disarono in the cavity of the strawberry. Finally if she's relaxed i'll message her until she's asleep.
What do you think about this for valentines day?
Sounds wonderful - hope it all works out; she's a lucky lady!
Reply:okwhy are yo trying to make us single people jealous. that's such a romantic idea. hope it all goes to plan
Reply:Well I guess it depends on if she would really like it or not. You know her the best. Some women love being pampered while some women keep it simple and are satisfied with an "I love you" or a simple hand made card. Like I said you know her the best, if shes comfortable with stuff liek that and you think she will like it...then go for it!!!!:) happy valentines day and good luck.

Looking for a vegan breakfast drink mix ...?
Before I became vegetarian (now trying to go vegan), I had been drinking Carnation Instant Breakfast drinks every morning for about a year. The only thing is, they contain milk. Does anyone know of any vegan breakfast drinks that I can mix with soy milk, or come prepackaged? I love all the nutrients that Carnation provided. Thanks in advance! :)
Looking for a vegan breakfast drink mix ...?
Hi Heidi, here's a very simple recipe
half a cup of soy milk(vanilla flavored if you like)
Half a cup of strawberries
half a banana
a few ice cubes
and if you want a thicker creamier smoothie add some soy ice cream!
You can alter your smoothies with whatever fruits you like, mangoes, any kind of berries!
It's really good!
Reply:GO FOR THE SMOOTHIE OPTION! They are nice, tasty, and nutritious! Yes, you will have to do a little work instead of just going, but they always taste so darn good!
Buy some frozen fruit to save some cash!
Good luck!
Reply:I saw something on Vegan Essentials the other day called Juvo. It says you can mix it with water, soy milk, or juice. Looks interesting. You might be able to find it at a health store.
Reply:There is something called Vega. http://www.myvega.com/main.asp
I have only found it at wholefoods. Look at www.veganessentials.com. It's quite expensive, but it's a superfood meal replacer. No soy.
Nature's Plus Spirutein is a drink mix, but you have to read the label. Some contain dairy whey and some are soy based. I am not sure of the vitamin sources (Vit D or A can be animal based, but I don't know about this particular company- check the website?) They are at least a little cheaper than Vega.
Reply:there's a drink called chai tea and it's made by naked juice, it's white, if that helps, and it tastes great. it also has a lot protein in it.
Reply:raw red meat from a dead cow
Reply:Here is a link that lists all the Veglife vegan powder mixes. Hope it helps!

Reply:Gee...vegetarian, that's pretty limited.
How about water?
Reply:Go into your backyard and pick some grass, blend it up with water and drink. You will be as vegan as a cow! Keeping in mind if you are a cow! Human beings are Omnivore's.
Humans
Humans are an omnivorous species due to their physiological adaptations to eating a varied diet of vegetation and meat. As with all omnivorous species they are capable of sustaining themselves with diets of just meat or vegetables but both must be carefully managed to avoid health problems (notably anemia with vegetarians and heart disease with those who eat diets made up mostly of meat). The digestive system and dentition of Homo sapiens serve as a prime example of omnivorous adaptations.

Does anyone give their toddler baby formula just because it can't hurt?
My four year old is a picky eater so I "fortify" his milk with it. I give it to my two year old too - just because. Is there anything wrong with this? I also give him Carnation Instant Breakfast and a multi-vitamin.
Does anyone give their toddler baby formula just because it can't hurt?
I'm continuing to give my son formula even though he is past 12 months. The extra nutrients found in formula are still good for the baby since they most likely do not get every nutrient needed from their meals.
Reply:I don't think there's anything wrong with it, but I do think you're wasting your money. Why feed them formula and a vitamin? I give my 18 month old twins Carnation Instant Breakfast in their milk in the morning too! My little boy is really small for his age. He eats like crazy, but he's little, so I just wanted to make sure he's getting everything he should. But I think formula, instant breakfast, and a vitamin is going a bit overboard. I would also check the iron content of everything you're giving them. If this vitamin, and the formula, and the instant breakfast ALL have iron in them, you could be doing more harm than good. Iron poisoning is number one in fatal overdoses in children under the age of six. (I read that off the back of a Flintstones vitamin bottle, that I took while I was pregnant.) I really think one of the three would be sufficient.
Reply:Wasting your money.
Reply:give them vitamins its much cheaper and just as good and make them eat things they dont like they will get less picky as soon a sthey realize your not going to give in to them having what they want all the time
Reply:I'd only be careful of how much sugar he's getting, but it shouldn't be an issue. If it were, they wouldn't be selling PediaSure.
You may be overdosing him on vitamin supplements, however. A single multi-vitamin with C and Iron does the trick, even with picky eaters -- the reason we have vitamins is because people don't eat a balanced diet. If one eats a balanced diet, one doesn't even need multivitamins.
Your pediatrician needs to know so s/he can give you the best recommendation and put your mind at ease.
Reply:My son is 19 months and we still use soy formula because he's lactose intolerant. There are even special formulas for children 12-24 months.
Good luck!
Reply:Some doctors are now recommending formula until at least 18 months and gradual weaning ONLY IF they pass anemia and other blood screenings. So no there is nothing wrong with giving formula, also most breastfed babies continue to nurse until 2-4 years, particularly in other parts of the world.
"Research comparing cow's milk and formula-fed infants during the first year of life has shown that cow's milk is irritating to the intestines of a tiny infant, causing infants to lose a tiny bit of blood in their stools, contributing to iron deficiency anemia. There is very little iron in cow's milk anyway, and the iron that is there is poorly absorbed. Concern about iron-deficiency anemia has led the American Academy of Pediatrics, backed by solid research, to discourage the use of cow's milk in children under one year of age. One of America's top pediatric hematologists (blood specialist), the late Dr. Frank Oski , Professor and Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at Johns Hopkin University (and co-author of a book entitled: Don't Drink Your Milk) advised parents to be cautious and not rush into the use of cow's milk, even during the second year of life. At present it would seem prudent to continue giving your baby iron-fortified formula during the second year of life and very gradually wean him to dairy products, beginning with yogurt. If your toddler generally has a balanced diet and routine hemoglobin tests show that he is not even close to being anemic, then switch from formula to whole milk sometime during the second year, but don't be in a hurry. Do gardenias, magnolias ang carnations have meanings or sentiments?????? what are their meanings?
Yes they do.
Gardenias mean 'I love you in secret'
Magnolias mean dignity and splendid beauty
Carnations are a little more complicated and depend on the colour of the flower...
Carnation as a whole means fascination
A pink carnation is an emblem of Mothers Day and means I will never forget you
A purple carnation signifies antipathy and capriciousness
A red carnation signifies admiration, my heart aches for you
A striped carnation means No, Sorry, I cannot be with you
A white carnation means pure love, sweet love, innocence
and a yellow carnation is for disdain and rejection

What should i have as my table centre pieces for my wedding night do?
candels, flowers or chocolates and the norm. i had vases filled with chocolates. which looked great.
its all down to your taste at the end of it.
hope the day goes well.
Reply:yes ,it a must
Reply:Little white night lights floating in bowls of burgundy coloured water. Surround outside with alternate leaves of white and burgundy.
Your plans sound lovely and hope the day matches it. Happiness to you both.
Reply:Nothing... i wouldnt bother.. its a waste of money and people will not notice either way! They are there to celebrate your marriage not discuss the table wear... I would just put some party favours in little packs for the women and children!

they have some neat ideas all you have to do is go to the craft store they are less expesive to make then to buy off the site!
Reply:SInce you are looking for inexpensive, don't do flowers, it will be dark, so they won't really see them anyway.
I saw really pretty ones with shaped mirrors (you can find them at your local craft store, most under $1.00) underneath pretty candle votives. It really sets the ambiance. Spread white and burgandy rose petals (silk or real) around them. It will be lovely.
Reply:Did you check with the reception hall to see if they provide anything for the tables?
When I got married the reception package included a bouquet of red roses on each table which went well because the girl's dresses were red.
