My 6 week old daughter is having constipation and gas issues. She was originally on Similac and then we changed her to Nestle Good Start Carnation with DHA %26amp; ARA. We try to give her plenty of water but she doesn't seem to like it. She is also on Mylacon which does seem to help her gas. The only way she seems to have a bowl movement is when we give her a glycerin supp.
Any suggestions on a different formula??
Constipated 6 week old - Good formula?
my son went from enfamil to similac due to a gas issue. try enfamil lipil and see if that works for your baby's constipation. have you tried talking to your child's pediatrician and see what they say you should do for constipation? its not good to continue to change formulas all the time. i think you should to talk to the pediatrician first before giving your child, glycerin, water or anything else for that matter. always consult the pediatrician first. just cause mom's tell you what worked for them, may not always work for your baby. so its always safe to double check with the doc.
for constipation, you can introduce prunes that are pureed... or juice (apple, or pear by gerber) or maybe even a teaspoon of KAYO SYRUP into your child's morning and evening bottle
The USDA recommends discussing the introduction of water with baby's pediatrician..the reason being is that their bottles are made up of 80% water.
A baby may "fill up" on water, resulting in him taking less breastmilk or formula. This then deprives him of the nutrients essential for healthy growth and development.
Too much water can stop your young baby's body from absorbing the nutrients it needs from milk. It can also lead to an imbalance of electrolytes.
Some doctors think its ok to introduce a little water after solids.
Reply:try SMA my baby brother had constipation until he moved onto this newborn to 3 month formula and now he is fine and no longer has any issues :)
hope this helps :)
Good luck with everything and if still in doubt ask your hea;th visitor or local gp for advise :)
Reply:all formula make-up is essentially the same, they have alot of iron in them (because the body doesn't absorb the iron as well from formula as opposed to breastmilk, so they have to put alot more iron in to ensure some will be absorbed), and they can pretty much all cause constipation. There is low-iron formula but this should not be used without a doctor's order because the baby can be at risk for anemia or malnutrition.
I'm assuming breastfeeding isn't an option here? (since that would pretty much take care of it)
Usually, a baby just needs time to adjust. Switching to soy or hypoallergenic formula can help in some circumstances where the baby may be having trouble digesting the lactose and that's whats causing the gas. Also, be sure you are mixing the formula correctly (I know this sounds like a given, but it actually happens alot, and if your making it too thick it can be very hard on their tummies).
Also, make sure she's in a good "pooping position", when my daughter was very small she could not poop laying down (which makes sense, I don't think I could poop laying down either). Let gravity work in your favor, keep her propped up after a feeding with her knees comfortably up against her chest.
Also, be aware that just because she may not be pooping every day doesn't mean she's constipated- many babies, especially formula fed, do not have a bowel movement every day, some may have one only twice a week and that's normal for them, and some straining is normal because most babies haven't coordinated their muscles well yet. True constipation will result in hard pellet like poop.
Reply:feed her what she's supposed to eat and I guarantee the constipation will go away!!
Reply:My son is on Similac Isomil Advance. It's soy and it really helped with gas and he is a very regular baby. Before he had major, major gas problems. Good luck!
Reply:Ask your doctor.
