Math Word Problem?

For a wedding, Shereda bought several dozen roses and several dozen carnations. The roses costs 15 cents per dozen, and the carnation cost 8 cents per dozen. Shereda bought a total of 17 dozen flowers and pad a total of $192.00. How many roses did she buy?

Could also please show me the work since there is another problem similar to this one and i want to learn how to solve it.

Math Word Problem?
since you buy 17 dozen and roses are most expensive, you never need to pay more than $2.55

so i think

roses are $15 per dozen

carnations are $8 per dozen

r*15+c*8 = 192

r+c=17

so

r*15 + (17-r)*8 = 192

7r = 192-136 = 56

r = 8

c = 17-r = 17-8 = 9
Reply:There is something wrong with your problem statement. Even using only the rose, you cannot spend $192.00!

$.15 * 17 = $2.55

or if it is $.15 per rose,

$.15 * 12 * 17 = $30.60

Using the carnation only will result in lower total cost so something is wrong with the data.

Once you get the data correct, the solution will be found by expressing the total in terms of only one flower. I'll use your data, but the answer will not be correct until you get the correct amounts.

Total roses plus carnations = 17: r + c = 17

Solve for r: r = 17 - c

Problem statement:

.15r + .08c = 192

Substitute the value of r expressed in terms of c:

.15(17 - c) + .08c = 192

Simplify and solve for c. Then to back to the original problem statement and use that value for c and solve for r.

If you use Dollar values instead of Cents, i.e. $15 and $8, then you can get a sensible answer.
Reply:**** I think you meant the roses cost 15 dollars a dozen and the carnations cost 8 dollars a dozen.******

roses = r

carnations = c

r + c = 17 ****************** equation 1

15r + 8c = 192 ************ equation 2

Multiply the first equation by 8.

8r + 8c = 136

Subtract it from the second equation.

7r = 56

r = 8

r + c = 17

8 + c = 17

c = 17 - 8

c = 9

You will get roses = 8 dozens and carnations = 9 dozens.
Reply:as 17*15c = 255c %26lt; $192.00 your rates are wrong.

The rates are $15 per doz roses, $8 per doz carnations.

Then

15R + 8(17 -- R) = 192 whence R = (192--136) / (15 -- 8) = 8

so 8 dozen Roses and 9 dozen Carnations.
Reply:$192 for 17 dozen of flowers! fairly costly I should say! ;-)
