My baby has been constipated pretty much his entire life. he is a month old and has been on Carnation good start, and then by dr advice, we switched to soy, since he was so constipated. (hard dry stools every few days with lots of crying and straining with the poop) He was on the soy for a little over a week, and if anything the symptoms got worse. He was very very constipated and was beginning to have troubles breathing, wheezing and coughing after feeding. The doctor told me to use half a child's glycerin suppository on him and get a can of nutrimagen formula to see if it helps.
With the suppository, he ended up pooping all night last night and this morning, all hard poops, and then this afternoon, it became more soft, but still pretty dry, and almost powdery looking. Is this normal for the hypoallergenic formula? He is not constipated anymore and seems to be doing better, but Im concerned that it is not wetter. He is wetting PLENTY of diapers a day though.
Nutramigen and change in stools...?
It sounds like he had an allergic reaction to the soy (which I'm sure you knew, but keep that in mind as he gets bigger and starts eating solid foods). I would give a few more days on the Nutramagin (sp?) and possibly see a peds gastro. He could have a few allergies. Obviously see your Dr or go to ER if you think something isn't right. His body still has to adjust to a lot.
Reply:singlemoms right soy and dairy proteins are VERY common allergens!
