she has been on similac advance with iron and similac isomil advance with iron and on carnation good start when she tries going she will cry and push then when i rub her tummy she wil go a little but its not always hard its like peanut butter looking and sometimes watery what could this be i already discussed this with my doctor she just keeps saying to give her water and juice my baby is only 5 weeks old. and has had this since she came home from the hospital.
My baby has been on 3 different formulas already because of contipation nothing is working what could this be.
my wife and i had this problem we were told to give her water or juice also this is what we did once ounce of juice twice a day. Apple or pear juice 100% juice or baby juice and we did not give it to her pure it was half an ounce water and half juice cleared it right up
Reply:How long are you waiting for each one to work?
Stick with the soy-based formula. For constipation, give you baby up to 2 ounces of water. Nothing more.
Don't introduce your baby to juice this young--she'll be fine with just water.
Stick with ONE formula for a few weeks. Stay with one brand and stay with soy. It sounds like her delicate system is confused!
Reply:Part of the problem for her could be that you're switching formulas too much! Give her lots of water, and pick ONE formula to work with for a few weeks, if she's still constipated, try a different one after atleast three weeks with the other formula.
She could be allergic to gluten, wheat, or dairy, so you may want to talk to your doctor about those possibilites.
Reply:try something with less iron. my 4 week old was having the same problem. my pediatrician said to give her 1 teaspoon of light karo syrup with 2 oz of water. worked like a charm. and really hasn't been constipated since. i use Parent's Choice Organic Formula. But the doc said it was the iron in it that was constipating her.
Reply:have you tried to give her the more advanced formula, so babies have protein sensitivities. you should look at the similac web page. www.welcomeaddition.com. check out all of there products. my daughter had serious problems with her stomach. she had sensitivities to soy and milk proteins. check out all the different kinds of formulas you have available. you should never give your baby juice, until they are ready to drink out of a cup.
your pediatric an should be telling you about different formulas not telling you to give your baby juice. Maybe you should see a different doctor and get a second opinion on your babies health
good luck
Reply:What Doctor told you to give a baby water that is not right and definatly not juice that can make the baby sick at such a young age. This is what you can do one of two things 1. You can go to the drug store and get a suppoitory and break it in half and insert it into the babies bottom make sure you have something underneath the bottom or 2. A baby enema.. they both work.
Reply:Maybe she has milk allergies. This happened to my baby when he was a newborn. We had to put him on Similac Alimentum.Maybe you should try it.He was constipated %26amp; wanted to eat every 2 hours %26amp; had a hard time getting the formula down until we started using Alimentum.Talk to your doctor to see if it is ok.If you switched formulas without doing it gradually that can make babies constipated also.
Reply:Try water, no more than two ounces at a time. No juice. Try some castor oil or something.
Reply:You need to talk to your pediatrician right away. Blockage in a baby that young or any baby for that matter can be very dangerous.
I would not give water nor juice to a 5 week old unless told to do so specifically by a doctor!
Reply:my daughter did the same thing and we had her on 5 different formulas. the one that worked the best which she is still on was Nutramigen by enfamil its kinda expensive but the Dr. can write you a prescription if you have health insurance and they can also give you samples to try until you find out if it works for you
Reply:My babies both had the same thing when they were on formula. I couldn't breastfeed so they went on it right away. Thier little bodies aren't made to take formula, and the formula with the extra iron is really, really hard on them. You may want to go back to Isomil becasue the soy seems to be easier than cow's milk to digest in such delicate systems. Keep up the juice (apple is best because apples are a natural way to get everything unstopped but half juice and half water) and eventually your little baby should get used to it. We found that belly rubs with body temp baby oil was a good way to get things moving, and the skin to skin contact is something that most babies like. Good luck!!!!
the three answers above me are wrong. NEVER give your baby any kind of castor oil, supository, or enema!!! Talk to your doctor about those so that she can tell you not to do that too! They are horrifically bad for your baby, and juice is not bad. Tree hugger is right about the breastmilk though, if you can get yours to come back, you may want to try that.
Reply:Give your baby breastmilk. That will clean her out. The reason your baby is constipated is all the iron. Find a new doctor. Juice is too harsh on a newborn's system. What the h*** is your doctor thinking? Really, if you are able, do give breastfeeding a try. You should still have milk at 5 weeks. Even if she will not nurse and you have to pump and feed her. She will benefit.
Reply:My twins have the same problem. Later I change milk powder to those with the words "lactose free" and it seems to work for them. So you might want to try those milk powder with lactose free.
Reply:I would give her the powdered goats milk I think its meyenberg or something that is what my son took, he never could handle those other formulas, and I gave him this stuff in his bottle once a day for three days it is baby intestinal flora, because sometimes they do not begin to produce this. But once you give it to ther for three days just one tablet desoved in the bottle it will help him to digest his food properly. Be patient it takes a little bit to go through his system. You get it at a health food store. Try rubbing her belly gently or gently tap it to help, there is probably alot of gas from the constipation that makes it more painful.
Reply:Iron even constipates adults. Try also Gripe Water. It is for colic but may also help with constipation. Search Gripe Water.
Reply:Its the iron in the formula thats is constipating your baby. Check with doctor if baby really needs the iron, the ask for suggustions the relieve the constipation. In the mean time increase water intake for the baby. You could also try adding a teaspoon of flax seed oil to the baby;s bottle
Reply:GIVE HER TIME. Babies have brand new "equipment" so to speak, and it takes time for it to adjust. Formula is slower to digest than breastmilk, so what may seem like constipation (the grunting, straining, and the more solid, peanutbuttery poop) turns out to be your daughter's digestive system developing.
I had the same concern with my son until I met other formula-feeding moms who reassured me that he'd be OK. Sure enough, by about 4 months old he was pooping like a pro!
If you feel the need to help her out, try this: lay her on her back on your bed and bring her knees to her chest. Hold the position for a second or two, then stretch her out gently. Do a few sets of this each day, and she's sure to feel better soon.
Reply:my son was the same way and is now on enfamil prosobee lipil with iron. i also had to give him gas relief drops because gas came along with the constipation.
Reply:I am guessing you are in the US so I can't advise on what formula to try but my first son had constipation for weeks and it seemed like forever. Every formula I tried wasn't right. It IS ok for you to give your baby cooled, boiled water between feeds but not as a substitute. I have a 2 week old and every midwife I have seen in that time has asked me if my baby is having water. They do get thirsty.
If she is constipated tho, her poo should be solid not runny? I would take her to the docs again just incase. Anyway, here are some tips I was given to help her go, try putting some brown sugar in her water or dialute a small amount of pure apple juice, make up one of her daily feeds with one less scoop of formula. After a feed take off her nappy and hold her over a changing mat- sit her up with her thighs on your hands and hold her legs appart- that worked everytime with my son but I had to watch out for shooting pee pee! Good luck xx
Reply:She is not constipated unless she has very hard stool, like rabbit pellets. What she has is an inflammed gut and she is having diarrhea because she cannot handle the formula she is on. She should be tried on ISOMIL, it is soy based. Your doctor should know this. AND NO- she should not be having water or juice. Switch doctors immediately. Go to the new one and take a diaper with the poop in with you. The doctor can test it for lactose intolerance, but she may be allergic to the protein in milk, not the sugar. It is even possible that she needs an ultraspecial formula like nutramegen. DO NOT switch formulas on your own, but get rid of that doctor. Has your doctor asked to see her poop? If not, you have the wrong doc.
Reply:probably, needs sugar,or light corn syrup in formula. only a teaspoon per liter should be enough.peanut butter looking is ok.she is too young for juice now.
Reply:So, keep giving her water and juice. You're not going to get a cure over night...you have to be consistent.
Reply:Try a little bit of brown sugar and boiled water. that used to work for my kids. Otherwise there is some constipation drops you can get from chemists.Or try a different formula. I had S26 for my kids and that was good.
Reply:Your baby could be lactose intolerant. My daughter is they kept telling me she was just constipated but please make an appt. with the doctor so you know for sure. Babies need their formula so dont take it away or give her water. water fills your babies little tummy up and babies need their nutrients. see your peditrian, soy formula is most likely your answer. good luck
Reply:it could be lactose intolerance try a formula that is soy
- your baby is too young for juice. You may have to get breast milk for her.
