Please tell me what is the meaning of this song?

This song is American pie.I like this song. Its madonnas song.

I cant understand the meaning. Please tell me its meaning.

Thank you.

A long, long time ago

I can still remember

How that music used to make me smile

And I knew that if I had my chance

I could make those people dance

And maybe they'd be happy for a while

Did you write the book of love

And do you have faith in God above

If the Bible tells you so

Now do you believe in Rock 'n' roll

And can music save your mortal soul

And can you teach me how to dance real slow

Well, I know that you're in love with him

'Cos I saw you dancin' in the gym

You both kicked off your shoes

Man, I dig those rhythm and blues

I was a lonely teenage broncin' buck

With a pink carnation and a pick-up truck

But I knew that I was out of luck

The day the music died

I started singing

Bye, bye, Miss American Pie

Drove my Chevy to the levee

But the levee was dry

And good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye

Singing this'll be the day that I die

This'll be the day that I die

I met a girl who sang the blues

And I asked her for some happy news

But she just smiled and turned away

I went down to the sacred store

Where I'd heard the music years before

But the man there said the music wouldn't play

Well now, in the streets the children screamed

The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed

But not a word was spoken

Tho church bells all were broken

And the three men I admire the most

The Father, Son and the Holy Ghost

They caught the last train for the coast

The day the music died

We started singin'

Bye, bye, Miss American Pie

Drove my Chevy to the levee

But the levee was dry

And good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye

Singing this'll be the day that I die

This'll be the day that I die

Bye, bye, Miss American Pie

Drove my Chevy to the levee

But the levee was dry

And good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye

Singing this'll be the day that I die

This'll be the day that I die

We started singin'

We started singin'

We started singin'

We started singin'

Please tell me what is the meaning of this song?
There is no official interpretation. The songwriter is Don McLean, and he has consistently refused to comment on different fan interpretations. Perhaps the most complete and widely accepted interpretation is the one compiled here:

And by the way, Madonna's abridged version frankly lacks the depth of the original McLean version, because the true meaning of the lyrics are known only to McLean.
Reply:go to the Don McLean page - NOW! Don't waste your time here. Don wrote on his website (http://www.don-mclean.com/i/ap.asp) "It is a gift for her to have recorded 'American Pie'", So he didn't seem to mind. One good thing is that it has brought my fellow pop fan teenagers (wierdos) closer to don McLean and sparked their interest in his music, so I can't curse Madonna for that. Don deserves the credit, and he got it. Oh, and the rumour that Madonna actually wrote the song, children - That's not true. Sorry to burst your bubble.
Reply:This is not Madonna. This is an old song from the '60's entitled "Bye, bye, Miss American Pie." It's really a nostalgic look at mid-1960's rock'n roll.

For an essay on the possible meaning of the lyrics, see:

Reply:Im going with: reaperohio. Its totally true. One of them had just gotten married too - hence,

I can’t remember if I cried

When I read about his widowed bride,

But something touched me deep inside

The day the music died.

And Madonna completely ruined this song! The lyrics have all changed and parts are missing!
Reply:It's not madonnas song.. it's don mcleans song =)

And DARN IT it's one of my favourite songs but that dude above me got there first :(
Reply:It is about the death of Buddy Holly and Richie Valens. They died in a plane crash in the 1950s.
Reply:At the time we heard it was about a generation's feelings after the plane crash that killed Richie Valens, The Big Bopper, and IDK who else. That was supposed to be "the day the music died."
