please help me thanks!!!
You bought ten carnations and five daisies for a total of $12.50. Later that day you bought five carnations and 8 daisies for a total of $11.75. Find the price of each carnation and of each daisies.
when I used matrixes to solve it, i kept on getting carnations = 41.25 and daisies =$ 11 but that soo wrong!
and then i go carnations= $.15, but then Daisies = -.25, but it can;t be negative. im so confused! someone please help me!!! THANKS!
Algebra2 word problem help please!?
10C + 5D = 12.5
5C + 8D = 11.75
Multiply the second by 2, and subtract the first from it:
10C + 16D = 23.5
10C + 5D = 12.5
-------------------------
11D = 11
D = 1
Daisies cost $1 each.
Now, substitute this back into either of your original equations:
10C + 5(1) = 12.5
10C = 7.5
C = .75
Carnations cost 75¢ each.
Reply:10C + 5D = 12.5
5C + 8D = 11.75
where C is price of carnation, D is for daisy.
You can use any method to solve it, but if you want to use matrices,
10C + 5D = 12.5
5C + 8D = 11.75
10512.5
5811.75
inverse

soln
0.75 for carnation
1 for daisy
Reply:10c + 5d = 12.50 ........................(1)
5c + 8d = 11.75
=%26gt; 10c + 16d = 23.50 ................(2)
subtracting (1) from (2),
11d = 11.00 =%26gt; d = 1.00
then from (1),
10c + 5(1.00) = 12.50
=%26gt; 10c = 7.50 =%26gt; c = 0.75
carnations @ $0.75, daisies @ $1.00 each.
Reply:let x = price of carnation, y = price of daisy
10x + 5y = 12.50
5x + 8y = 11.75
matrix goes
10 5 12.50
5 8 11.75
take half of first and subtract from second
10 5 12.50
0 5.5 5.5
then reduce second by dividing through by 5.5
10 5 12.50
0 1 1
multiply second by 5 and subtract from first
10 0 7.50
0 1 1
now divide first by 10
1 0 0.75
0 1 1
check by direct substitution (should be solvable)
rearrange first, y = 12.50/5 - 10x/5, y = 2.5 - 2x
substitute into second equation
5x + 8(2.5 - 2x) = 11.75
-11x + 20 = 11.75
-11x = -8.25
x = 0.75, y = 1.00
check
make sure you set up your matrix right and watch the direction of multiplication, might be getting to the roots of x and y by eliminating improper
Reply:keep it simple and create two equations and set them equal to each other
use c for carnations and d for daisies, then
10c + 5d = 12.5 and
5c + 8d = 11.75
solve for one variable and plug into the other equation
10c = 12.5 - 5d
c = 1.25 - .5d plugs into
5(1.25 - .5d) + 8d = 11.75
distribute out
6.25 - 2.5d + 8d = 11.75
5.5d = 5.5
d = $1.00, then plug back in
10c + 5(1.00) = 12.5
10c = 7.5
c = $0.75
plug and chug to check your answers.
