This song is American pie.I like this song. Its madonnas song.

I cant understand the meaning. Please tell me its meaning.

Thank you.

A long, long time ago

I can still remember

How that music used to make me smile

And I knew that if I had my chance

I could make those people dance

And maybe they'd be happy for a while

Did you write the book of love

And do you have faith in God above

If the Bible tells you so

Now do you believe in Rock 'n' roll

And can music save your mortal soul

And can you teach me how to dance real slow

Well, I know that you're in love with him

'Cos I saw you dancin' in the gym

You both kicked off your shoes

Man, I dig those rhythm and blues

I was a lonely teenage broncin' buck

With a pink carnation and a pick-up truck

But I knew that I was out of luck

The day the music died

I started singing

Bye, bye, Miss American Pie

Drove my Chevy to the levee

But the levee was dry

And good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye

Singing this'll be the day that I die

This'll be the day that I die

I met a girl who sang the blues

And I asked her for some happy news

But she just smiled and turned away

I went down to the sacred store

Where I'd heard the music years before

But the man there said the music wouldn't play

Well now, in the streets the children screamed

The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed

But not a word was spoken

Tho church bells all were broken

And the three men I admire the most

The Father, Son and the Holy Ghost

They caught the last train for the coast

The day the music died

We started singin'

Bye, bye, Miss American Pie

Drove my Chevy to the levee

But the levee was dry

And good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye

Singing this'll be the day that I die

This'll be the day that I die

And good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye

Ok Don Mclean wrote this...not Madonna. If it was "Like an American Pie" I could go with your idea. It's about the histroy of rock and roll. It's symbolic for different events and people.

First three stanza's are the build up to the story. Then in the forth stanza the Narrator remembers, "the day the music died." This was when Buddy Holly, Richie V and Big Bopper went down in a plane crash.

I met a girl who sang the blues

And I asked her for some happy news

But she just smiled and turned away

Janis Joplin

And the three men I admire the most

The Father, Son and the Holy Ghost

They caught the last train for the coast

The day the music died

Again reference to the three killed in the plane crash.

Other references in lines to people:

Now for ten years we’ve been on our own

And moss grows fat on a rollin’ stone,

Ok so what he's saying here is we've moved from musical innocence to a more serious time. Rolling stone is actually a reference to Bob Dylan, not the rolling stones (though there may be some who argue).

jester on the sidelines in a cast

Bob Dylan motorcycle accident.

King likely Elvis

The birds flew off with a fallout shelter,

Eight miles high and falling fast

The Byrds.

Jack flash sat on a candlestick

Cause fire is the devil’s only friend.

Reference to the Rolling Stones.

There's a lot more here, but again it's a history of rock and roll viewed through the lens of the death of Buddy, Richie, and Bopper from a decade later.

I hope that helps.
Reply:First, it's not Madonna's song. She sang a cover of it. The actual artist is Don McLean.
Reply:That's right. Maddona wouldn't have the brains to compose something like this.
Reply:madonna? part of it is when buddy holly died......the day the music died. work it out yourself though, that is what music is about.
