Did you plant them from seed? Anything can happen. If it was too dry or too wet you may have lost the seed. I would think they would have come up in two months time.
I have had good luck planting cutting-propagated carnations as growing plants. There are a lot of good varieties of Dianthus that are short stemmed and make good sunny garden plants. The long stemmed ones for cut flowers are sometimes floppy in the garden. You can overwater them easily so be thoughtful with use of the garden hose.
