Safe plants for beta fish?

What are some plants that I could put in the water with my beta fish? Could I put the fish in a large vase with just any flowers (carnations, roses)?

Good suggestions, please.

Safe plants for beta fish?
You should only use certain plants with beta fish. This is because some plants are poisonous to the fish, and some plants do not grow well in the water. Water lillies are good, as someone mentioned. My favorite to use in beta bowls is Pothos, which is really just that common vine plant that is very easy to find, cheap, and hardy. It can have either solid green leaves or green/white streaked leaves. I recently got one at Walmart for a beta bowl. It was around $5 and was sold in a hanging basket. I split the plant, repotted half, and used the other half with the fish. If you do this, be very careful to rinse off as much of the dirt/fertilizer as possible first! Good luck with your beta; they truly are beautiful fish!
Reply:If your looking for just green plants good for hiding spots for your betta, they love Java Moss or Java Ferns. You can probably find them in a pet store or on line.
Reply:You can safely put any aquatic plant in with a betta but don't use floating plants. Bettas are surface breathers and floating plants block their ability to get to the surface. Bettas should also not be put in an unfiltered vase unless you are willing to do water changes at least every other day. Otherwise, the ammonia build up will kill them. They also need room to swim.

Reply:you should not keep him in a vase at all, bettas are tropical fish that should be kept in water temps around 78°F to 80°F. they also, like any other fish, do best in filtered tanks. that's not saying bettas won't survive for a while in a vase or bowl, obviously they do. however, they won't THRIVE, keeping them in unheated water will make them weak and more prone to diseases, they'll also be listless and not nearly as colorful as they would be in a heated tank, try to think of it this way....

would you want to be kept in a cold closet with no toilet? of course not! well what if they cleaned the floor out once or twice a week, you'd be okay with it then, right? of course not! you'd still be cold and cramped and in your own filth for a few days of the week. it's the same for a betta.

pet stores try to make them seem like no maintenance pets, but they aren't. no pet is. they know people will buy them because this fish that "likes" small places like a vase or bowl and doens't need a filter (my favorite is when they say they LIKE dirty water... who on earth thought of that?!) and is absolutely gorgeous. it would work perfect on a desk or as a centerpiece. however, there is no such fish, bettas involve just as much care as any other fish to be healthy, they are just hardier.

however, any plant that is safe for aquariums and isn't rough or anything will be fine. if you insist on a vase still I highly recommend a silk plant because no plant will survive in just a vase of water. except for some floating plants which aren't good for bettas because bettas breathe from the surface, and floating plants block the surface.... see why this whole betta vase craze really is a bad idea?
Reply:You could go with almost any plant. As long as you keep the roots only in the water with the betta it will do fine. For the vase type "tank" for your betta a nice bulb would do cause you can just sit it on top of the vase where it is small and it wont fall into the water. Go to lowes or wally world and look at all the bulbs and choose which you like the best. A betta will live in a vase with a plant in it and they will thrive of you do your work. Keep up on your water changes religously! also I add product called "leaf Zone" to my betta bowls. The product is non toxic to your fish and fertilizes the plant.

Good luck!
