Can anyone help me with theatre traditions regarding flowers?

Is it traditionally red carnations or red roses that are thrown onto the stage after a performance? I have a feeling it's carnations but I wanted to pass on the bloom in person (my friend is in a production tonight), so I thought a red rose would be more appropriate.

Can any thesps out there advise me on the conventions?

Don't worry about convention, just give your friend whatever their favourite is
Reply:Thanks everyone, especially Richard K - I went with a carnation eventually, which was well-received, and the show was great!

Reply:What a lovely friend you are.

I think red carnations are traditional for throwing onto the stage but Roses are what you would hand to someone, espically as a single bloom. Go with the rose and enjoy the show.
Reply:As a writer, where are mine?
Reply:red roses! always look good means love and look glamorous!i don't really think it matters as i worked in theatre for years and years and saw every kind of flower going!! usually people tried to see who'd got the biggest bouquet!! lol!
