Carnation Good Start formula lumps?

Does anyone know how to prevent getting lumps in formula? I have tried stirring it and shaking it (which really doesnt work!) and there is always a few lumps that I have to find and smush out... I switched to good start for wic, but I was originally using enfamil which I did not notice any lumps.... Anyone else have this problem only with good start???

Thanks in advance

Carnation Good Start formula lumps?
Yes, goodstart is cheap crap, unfortunately if you want to feed you child in an economically sufficient manner, you have to put up with it. Have you tried adding formula to the bottle first, and then water with a good hardy shake at the end? That usually diminshed the lumpies a bit for me, although some of those little buggers still persisted. Good luck!
Reply:I had this problem and used a butter knife and stirred it really well.
Reply:it's all lumpy unless you mix it well
Reply:I use Goodstart and to the one answer who says Goodstart is crap, well it isn't. It is much easier on baby's tummy. For the lumps, you just have the shake the heck out of it. I shake and shake, and look at the bottom of the bottle for lumps, if I see them I just skake real hard for a few more seconds and I have had no problems. I did just switch formulas though. I do breastfeed, but I supplement.
Reply:Hi there!

Both my children were raised on Carnation Good Start, and yes I did find it had lumps. Some tips:

1. Make the formula while the water is hot. It seems to melt the lumps away.

2. Use distilled water. (you can buy it in 4L jugs at any drug store). It seems to help with the lumps as well

3. I eventually got sick of the lumps, and switched to liquid concentrate. (lol)

Good Luck
Reply:I had this problem. I used this formula with my daughters colic. I would get a quart plastic bottle and put the powder in and add warm water, just a bit and shake like crazy. Then gradually add the rest of the water and shake as you go. I like the bottle cause I would make for the whole day and just fill the bottles as I went. Hope it works for you.
Reply:With my son I used goodstart but i used the liquid kind. it was great, no lumps and less messy to make. you just put 3 oz water with 3 oz liquid formula and for a 6 oz bottle. half and half. you might wanna try that, you can even get it with wic if you get it.
Reply:I'd have stuck with the Enfamil if it was me. That said, your bigger problem here is not the lumps, it's switching around the formulas on your baby! The formula makes a huge difference to your infant, you cannot just switch them out each time you get on new assistance or get a whim! It changes their digestion and the nutrients they get and do not get among other things.

Pick one formula, stick with it lumps or not. The lumps are just one of the hundreds of reasons breast feeding was a better idea for your infant. I think if you press them all out with the fork, or strain it back into there, it will be OK. Formulas take a lot of patience to deal with. Enfamil is a really great one though carnation good start is supposed to be easy to digest, or so they say.

One idea is you can contact the people that make these formulas and ask them for tips. They usually have a help line number somewhere on the container, or get online and find the phone number. You are not the first one to ask about lumps in that brand or another question on another brand, so call and see what they say! Sometimes they will send you free formula just for asking about their formula or for leaving your opinion with them.

Best of luck to you!
Reply:I had this problem with both of my kids with the Good Start when the water wasn't warm enough. I used hot water from my (filtered) tap so I didn't have to heat it up, it saved time. However, if the water was only luke warm the formula wouldn't dissolve as smooth. I don't know about the other brands doing this, my siblings kids all had problems with Enfamil and Similac so I used the Good Start along with nursing. Good luck.
