Reply:Why do you pick these songs?! every time I hear that song, or play it myself, I am for a few minutes a 16 yrs old, and all alone at the dance. It was the last week of our junior year in high school, I had a date for the Junior prom, we where not dating, but she wanted to go, and I didn't have a girl, so I got up more nerve than i had and asked her to go, she said she would live to , but couldn't afford a dress, so I bought her one, and she picked it out,and for the time it was big money,. Well The day of the Prom I had to go get my tuxedo a town away, and rode on the back of my freinds motorcylcle, it started to ran cats and dogs, we got there dripping wet, but them in a few plastic bags and raced home, I got ready in record time, and my monm even let me borrow her 75 ford pinto (what a ride!), I grapped the carnation from the refigerator and headed up tho the girls house, I walk up and knock, and her mother answers the door, I ask where she is, and her mother says, "she already left with her date?, I said I was her date, who picked her up?! she said a blonde headed boy in a blue and white jeep. I wa dumb-founded, My Best friend picked her up? waht was going on? I was in a daze. as far as I had know he was not going, his steady girl friend for the past year, went to another school, and they would go to hers next week, so waht was going on. I went to the Prom, all my other friends say where is your date Ed? I said She's with Marty?!, they said Marty isn't here!? waht do you mean?!...I just looked around for about 20 minures and left. Well they never shouwed up, they had gone to the sand pits for some back seat calastetics. Marty's girl frined got news of it, since her own sister and mother worked at our school as teachers (he was never to bright), and she put him through living hell, He tried to apologize, but I just didn't want to hear it, the girl neve r came back to school, she transfered to another town the next yearI guess, and what I wa stuck with is a memory of having no date at the prom, I didn't have a white sports coat, but I had a tuxedo and a carnation, and a bill for a dress, and two tickets never used, that I gave to marty. But I tell you the song always hit me straight in the old memory of a 16 year olds heart, I'm not down about it, and as i've mentioned before, the song let me know I wasn't the nly one who went though such things. strange as it may seem, I wouldn't trade that memory for one with a "better" ending. One of my daughters was going to cancel out on a bou the last week for another "Hottie" who asked her, and I told hermy story, and said you will go with who you first said you would, and you will ahve fun with him, and stay with him, when she asked why? I said, do it for me, I would of had a fun time, and don't want him not to ( I then gave the guy $40 on the sly to take her to her favorite chinese place instead of macdonalds ). she went and had fun with him.
