Word Problem, How Do I Solve?

What to do I with this problem? I'm not really good at it and would reall like to learn.

For a wedding, shereda bought several dozen roses and several dozen carnations. The roses cost $15 per dozen, and the carnations cost $8 per dozen. Shereda bouught a total of 17 dozen flowersand paid a total of $192. How many roses did she buy?

A: 6 Dozen

B: 7 Dozen

C: 8 Dozen

D: 9 Dozen

Word Problem, How Do I Solve?
This is actually a math problem rather than a word problem, so this isn't really the right category for it. However...

Shereda's total cost is $192, which is the cost of the roses plus the cost of the carnations, which is $15 times the number of roses plus $8 times the number of carnations. So, let's let x be the number of roses and y be the number of carnations.

That means that her cost is: 192 = 15x + 8y (A)

The total number of flowers is 17 dozen, which is the number of roses plus the number of carnations.

Total number of flowers is: 17 = x + y (B)

From (B), we can determine that y = 17 - x (or the number of carnations is 17 dozen minus the number of roses). We can substitute this back into (A) and get the following equation:

192 = 15x + 8(17 - x)

which leads to:

192 = 15 x + 136 - 8x

which leads to:

192 = 7x + 136

If we subtract 136 from both sides we get:

56 = 7x

Dividing both sides by 7 we get:

8 = x, which is the same as x = 8

Therefore, Shereda bought 8 dozen roses, and she must have bought 9 dozen carnations. You can check this conclusion out by figuring out the total cost for 8 dozen roses and 9 dozen carnations to verify that it equals $192.
Reply:The answer is C: 8 dozen.

$15.00 x 8 = 120

$192.00 - 120 = 72

72 / $8.00 = 8
Reply:8 dozen roses.

x is total dozen of roses

y is total dozen of carnations

15x + 8y = 192

(15 x 8) + (8 x 9) = 192

120 + 72 = 192

In 15 x 8, the fifteen is price of roses while the 8 is number of dozens.
Reply:C. 8 Dozen.

And here's why:

$15 x 8 dozen roses = $120

$8 x 9 dozen carnations = $72

$120 + $72 = $192

Therefore, the answer is 8 dozen roses.
Reply:8 dozen.

you need to figure out how many dozen roses costs at $15 and how many $8 carnations will get you.

Total = 192

8x15 = 120

Subtotal = 72

How many 8's go into 72? - 9

Therefor she bought 9 dozen carnations and 8 dozen roses.

Now kick me them 10 points! :D
