Flower that is similar to Carnations?

My grandma used to have like a big bush or something in her yard, with what looked like little baby carnations. I looked at one nursery today and they didn't have them or even knew what I was talking about. So I called around and got ahold of one other place and they said I was talking about Azalea's. I looked them up and what I found looked nothing like a carnation.

So my question is: Is there a plant/bush/flower that looks like a mini carnation? Or are there baby actual carnations? If noth, which requires the LEAST upkeep?

You are talking about Dianthus and they are one of the best mass bedding border plants ever used.
Reply:There are miniature carnations. Look them up on the internet %26amp; see if this is what you're talking about. Carnations are my favorite flower.
Reply:dianthus. not only do they look like mini carnations, many also have very pleasant fragrances.
Reply:I agree with Dianthus..I also always thought that asters looked a little like a carnation (they require almost no attention, get pretty tall and grow like crazy)
Reply:You must be thinking about camelias or begonnias.....Probably though camelias look like small carnations!
Reply:I believe you are talking about Dianthus. Check out this link, I think it's what you're looking for. They come in many different colors and color variations.

Reply:Yes, there are baby carnations called "pinks"; part of the Dianthus genus. Have a look at the images at http://recordgarden.co.uk/Index.cfm?fuse... and http://www.humeseeds.com/dianth.htm - is that what you remember?

The baby ones usually require less work as they're closer to the original wildflower (the big ones have been cultivated to be bigger for cut flowers), though it's not always the case. The nursery should have known about them - next time ask to speak to a horticulturalist, not a salesperson, or ask after "Sweet William", which is one of the better known types of pink.
Reply:Dianthus is the same family as the carnations.... it comes in many forms ... there are perrenial varieties such as 'Firewitch' and 'Bath's Cheddar Pinks' that are small carnation looking flowers.... now i wouldn't consider this a bush ...more like a ground cover...
